2nd Seminar on Mental Health and Intellectual Disability
After the success of the 1st Seminar on Mental Health and Intellectual Disability, the Catalan Health Institute, the Catalan Society of Psychiatry and Mental Health and Granés Fundació are coming together to organise the 2nd Seminar. It will be held on 19 May, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, in a mixed format: in-person at the Functions Room of the Hospital Santa Caterina, Parc Hospitalari Martí i Julià in Salt, and it can also be followed online. Registration for the event is now open at this link.
The health community is talking about the new healthcare paradigm based on values shared by the local community to foster social engagement and connectivity, solidarity and recognition of diversity, while also recommending fair, sustainable, transparent use of available resources to achieve better results and experiences for each individual. Mention is made, especially, of reducing or eradicating “low value” practices for which there is insufficient evidence of the benefits they offer or which have an unfavourable risk-benefit ratio.
People with intellectual disability, autism or both conditions have a higher likelihood of undergoing this type of practice and, among them, a higher likelihood of being prescribed psychotropic drugs (often without a diagnosis that justifies it); a higher likelihood of using practices that limit consensual decision-making; or using mobility restriction strategies as the sole measure for behavioural control.
Granés Fundació, the Catalan Health Institute and the Catalan Society of Psychiatry and Mental Health invite you to attend and take part in this second joint seminar, which follows on from the first seminar, attended by more than 350 professionals working in social entities, basic and specialised social services, and primary, specialised and hospital healthcare, and in education. In one way or another, all these professionals provide support to improve the quality of life of people with intellectual disability and mental illness.
